Chapada Diamantina is a geographical region in Bahia with more than 20 cities, and is the size of` Belgium or the Netherlands. Chapada Diamantina is a beautiful region and offers activities such as: -Hiking -Trekking -Climbing (some of the highest peaks in northeast brazil) -Bathing in nice waterfalls -Visit to` Quilombo communities (black communities of former slaves) in Rio de Contas city by hiking. The National Park of Chapada Diamantina includes regions of the cities like Itaetê, Lençóis, Andaraí, Palmeiras, Mucugê and Ibicoara. Rio de Contas is not included in the area of the National Park but it is a very important city in Chapada Diamantina to visit, because it is the oldest city there. History: in this current civilization the Quilombos communities are responsible for the local population in Chapada Diamantina since the seventeenth century. The Black people arrived fugitives from slavery of the sugar cane plantations. They founded many Quilombos in the region of Chapada Diamantina and they began to live here before the arrival of the colonizers.  The colonizers, who came long after searching for gold and thus creating the "Golden circuit", that includes the region of Catolés, Rio de Contas and Arapiranga. When the gold was depleted, diamonds began to be discovered in mines of the regions between Mucugê, Igatu, Andaraí and Lençois. Thus resulting in the "diamond circuit". However long before the region was already dwelling place for the by Indians called Tapuias. There is also rock painting in the region of Chapada Diamantina with 50,000 years, vestiges that man inhabits in Chapada Diamantina since prehistoric times.
